The World Premiere of the documentary The Borneo Case is to be held at the Freedom Film Festival in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, on 20 August 2016, at 2pm.
The Borneo case has been chosen as the Opening Film of the festival. The screening will be followed by a Q&A session with Swedish filmmaker Erik Pauser. Bruno Manser Fund director Lukas Straumann and Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle Brown will be participating in a live skype discussion with the festival audience at 3:30 pm.
The Borneo Case is a unique story filmed over 25 years and tells the epic tale of how the rainforest of Sarawak has been destroyed and how vast illicit assets have been acquired by the former Chief Minister and current Governor of Sarawak, Abdul Taib Mahmud, and his closest family members. It begins with Bruno Manser's disappearance in the jungles of Borneo in May 2000 and closely follows the Bruno Manser Fund's Stop Timber Corruption campaign which aims at identifying and recovering assets stolen by the Taib family and other politically exposed persons from Malaysia.
The film has been directed by Stockholm-based filmmakers Erik Pauser and Dylan Williams and is featuring indigenous activist Mutang Urud, Radio Free Sarawak anchorman Peter John Jaban, Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle Brown as well as Lukas Straumann, executive director of the Bruno Manser Fund.
According to the producers, the film's release has been unclear until the very last minute because of the film's controversial content. The film has been co-produced by ten European TV stations and will premiere in Europe in November 2016.
